An Abundant Species
There are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes. Not all mosquitoes bite humans and only a couple hundred species actually feast on human blood.
A Common Pest
The mosquito is a common flying insect that can be found all around the world. 175 species of mosquitoes can be found in the United States.
Thirsty For Blood
A mosquito can drink up to 3X its weight in blood, and only female mosquitoes bite humans. Male mosquitoes can feast on plants, but females need a blood meal to lay eggs.
Female Mosquitoes
The female’s saliva contains an anti-coagulant that allows her to suck up her food. The saliva produces an allergic response from the victim’s immune system, resulting in an itchy bump.
